VJ Day Memorial Walk – Sunday 14th August 2022
Our dear friend, Mr Len Gibson would have been 102 years young in 2022. A Far East Prisoner or War, he endured near starvation, disease and brutality in World War 2. Sadly we lost Len in July 2021.
To remember Len and all the other FEPoW’s our charity founder, Brian Burnie has created the ‘VJ DAY Memorial Walk’ this year This year Brian and supporters will be walking from Sunderland Cenotaph at Mowbray Park to the Cenotaph at Newcastle Haymarket. We’re asking everyone to join in parts of the walk – perhaps just a few yards, a few miles, or the whole distance to remember Len and his friends of the ’Forgotten Army’.
With the support of the Mayor of Sunderland Cllr Harry Trueman and Cllr Habib Rahman, the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, together with Deputy Lord Lieutenant from Tyne and Wear Major Eric Ingram, Buglers, Standard Bearers, family and friends, we’re hoping for a great turn out in 2022.
No tickets are required, and more information will be available soon on this free activity. Please show your support on this special day. Thank you.
Approximate times: Sunday 14th August 2021
- Depart Sunderland Cenotaph at 07:00
- Stop at 11:00 for a two-minute silence at South Shields Town Hall
