PATIENT TRANSPORT – VOLUNTEER COMPANION

The Charity

Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care (DAAB) provide free transport to patients receiving cancer treatment at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (Freeman Hospital). We have a fleet of distinctive ambulances, manned by a dedicated and compassionate team of volunteer drivers and companions.

We have been serving the North East for over ten years, taking the stress and worry of hospital journeys away from patients, allowing them to focus on their treatment and recovery.

The Role

The role of the Daft as a Brush Companion is to support the patient during their journey to the location of their treatment. This includes supporting the driver in their role, which is to ensure the safe and timely collection of the patient from a predetermined point to the location of their treatment.

Working as part of a team with your designated DAAB Driver, you will ensure that the patient is transported in a comfortable and caring environment. The Companion is responsible for the use of the ambulance navigation equipment and mobile phone.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect and deliver patients to predetermined locations, in a safe and timely manner.
• All vehicles and equipment to be used in line with DAAB training and procedures.
• Always ensure the highest levels of patient confidentiality.
• Ensure ambulance is clean and tidy throughout the day.
• Deliver the highest standards of patient safety and comfort.
• Adhere to DAAB Code of Conduct.

Person Specification & Requirements – Essential

• Age limits – minimum 21 years old.
• Able to commit to a full day of volunteering, occasionally starting and finishing at an unsociable hour.
• Access to emails and able to use a mobile phone/computer.
• No medical conditions affecting your ability to meet the key responsibilities of role.
• Effective communication skills, and able to handle sensitive situations with empathy and tact.
• Good time management and organisation skills.

The suitability of an applicant at this stage will be assessed using an application form and interview.

Later stages of the application will include an online occupational health questionnaire.

Unsuccessful applicants can reapply after a minimum of six months.

We have been serving the North East for over ten years, taking the stress and worry of hospital journeys away from patients, allowing them to focus on their treatment and recovery.

The Role

The role of the Volunteer Driver is the safe and timely collection of patients from a predetermined point to the location of their treatment, this is predominantly but not exclusively the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (Freeman Hospital).

Working as part of a two-person crew (Driver & Companion), you will ensure that patients are transported in a safe, comfortable, and friendly environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect and deliver patients to predetermined locations, in a safe and timely manner.
• All vehicles and equipment to be used in line with DAAB training and procedures.
• Always ensure the highest levels of patient confidentiality.
• Ensure ambulance is ready for service at the start and end of every day.
• Deliver the highest standards of patient safety and comfort.
• Adhere to DAAB Code of Conduct.

Person Specification & Requirements – Essential

• Hold a full UK car license.
• Age limits – minimum 25 years, maximum 75 years (at time of application).
• Able to commit to a full day of volunteering, occasionally starting and finishing at an unsociable hour.
• Proficient in driving a larger vehicle while carrying passengers, and comfortable driving across the region and in built up areas.
• Access to emails and able to use a mobile phone/computer.
• No medical conditions affecting your ability to drive or meet the key responsibilities of role.
• Effective communication skills, and able to handle sensitive situations with empathy and tact.
• Good time management and organisation skills.

The suitability of an applicant at this stage will be assessed using an application form and interview.

Later stages of the application will include a health assessment and driving assessment.
