Charity Boss to restart epic walking challenge from Teesside to Torquay fulfil his promise.

Brian Burnie

Despite already completing the full distance around Great Britain and Ireland, Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care founder Brian Burnie, 78, has re-started his epic charity challenge.

Walking the entire coast of Great Britain and Ireland, cancer charity founder, Brian, was stopped in his tracks by covid.

When forced to return to Newcastle, he completed most of the remaining miles during lockdowns with laps of his back garden and neighbouring golf course to cover the distance between Torquay and Middlesbrough.

Early September 2020, Mr Burnie and supporters began the final 100 miles walking from Middlesbrough to Newcastle and on 23rd September, accompanied by his dear friend, 101-year-old Len Gibson, they crossed the NewcastleGateshead Millennium Bridge to complete the equivalent distance of 7,036 miles.

It’s unbelievably moving...

Looking back, Brian admits not being satisfied;
“I’ve certainly walked the miles, but a part of me is disappointed."

"I had many more NHS Cancer Centres to visit and an audience in the House of Lords arranged. I promised to walk around Great Britain and Ireland, so before I am pushing up daisies I’ve made the decision fulfil that vow.”

Then 78-year-old has had to live with Parkinson’s disease for the last decade.

Mr Burnie’s charity, Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care, arranges free journeys for cancer patients to and from hospital. His walk highlights the transport issues cancer patients face all over the country who require Chemotherapy / Radiotherapy hospital appointments, as he plans to take the charity’s free service nationwide.

Supported by the charity’s volunteers and well-wishers, Brian’s boots are walking again from James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough to Torbay Hopsital in Torquay. He plans to fully complete his challenge in September 2022. Brian’s dream is to take the North East charity nationwide to create 1,000,000 free cancer patient journeys.
